Dr. Thomas Caltabilota is the founder of City By The Sea Veterinary Hospital. Opening his very own hospital has always been his dream.
Raised in neighboring West Long Branch, Dr. Tom comes from a big Italian family with a long last name. A summer job at Monmouth Park racetrack in his teens provided a special insight into the human-animal bond and a vet’s role in maintaining it. This passion took him to Rutgers University where he worked with exercising horses on high-speed treadmills and studied performance-enhancing drugs. Here, he also met his future wife, Dr. Avery Kasten, who is our Medical Director at City By The Sea Veterinary Hospital. After Rutgers, Thomas moved to the bayou of Louisiana where he fell in love with college football, gumbo, and crawfish. In between games and meals, he also obtained a Master’s degree in equine endocrinology from LSU. Dr. Tom attended Tuskegee University in Alabama for his veterinary training. Here he diversified his animal experience with the addition of cats and dogs and worked at an ER in Birmingham.
After vet school, the doctors moved to back home to NJ, in Asbury Park. Dr. Tom completed an internship at Garden State Veterinary Specialists and then started a house-call palliative care practice and worked as a relief doctor at many clinics and ERs throughout New Jersey. In his free time, he loves spending time with his family, traveling and meeting and making new friends.
